Selah, Rachel and I (Carolyn) just returned from Guatemala. It's interesting how it feels more and more like "home" and is getting harder and harder to leave! God is so faithful to keep showing himself through this walk of faith and frankly us just throwing our arms up and saying "TAKE IT ALL, JESUS!!!" He's so faithful to show us "THIS is why..." I had some real revelations while we were there..... Many of you will remember this:
This is just 3 months later in October of 2008. Many of you have heard Selah speak about life as a former orphan and living with HIV.... She does this to fight stigma and is addicted to seeing kids like her set in families.....
So, you will understand why the next experience in the following picture undid me:
Here she is, 16 years old....... PRECIOUS.... HEALTHY and WHOLE.... speaking LIFE over our first baby at VOH....... Telling him "No shame in our game, baby!!" She didn't want to leave Guatemala, she knows with all of her heart she was created for this. She's in the know in so many ways and has the advantage in reaching hearts from a place that only comes from having "been there"..... BOY, she has "been there". She knows and loves to share Who her HEALER and REDEEMER is...... She is poised with grace.... and a regal authority that only comes from ONE. What a joy and privilege it is for Kiel and I watch what God is doing with her NOW!! ........WHY??
Amy and I were entertaining one of the child welfare judges from the city, as well as a social worker. We saw her (judge) demeanor change as she realized we would be having a special focus on children with HIV. First she questioned if we were putting "healthy" kids with kids with HIV. We knew we were up against ignorance and were only semi surprised when the judge declared HIV could be "caught" on a toilet seat. Within 5 minutes Amy and I were able to share TRUTH. The judge eagerly agreed to attend a workshop for HIV education and to bring 6 more judges and social workers with her if we would arrange it. (Mind you, THESE are the judges that determine the fate of orphans) A while later she was marveling at Selah and Rachel. Selah was playing around with a guitar, looking all glowy (I know it's not a real word) like she always does and the judge commented again on her. I felt prompted by the Holy Spirit to share Selah's testimony with her. The judge was shocked. We returned to our sitting room and she stood up to explain that she has always been horrified of HIV, she acted out how she would pull away from someone she suspected was HIV+, and refuse to shake their hand. She went so far as to put her hand behind her back. She got tearful and thanked us for sharing with her. She said "I didn't know" a few times. Then she said she didn't want to leave!! When they got up to depart, she HUGGED AND KISSED Selah!! For REAL!! During this time she asked if we could do something with a mother with HIV that she was broken up about. (We (Project HOPEFUL) already have a program in place for mom's!) We were able to blow her away with a confident YES! We will be returning late October or early November with our partner at University of Chicago to give a full blown workshop for professionals in Guatemala determining the fate of the children! ............WHY??
It's not about Kiel and I going and doing ministry in Guatemala.
